PLAN TO REBUILD PALACE GATE OPPOSED

On 25 September 2007, Xinhua News Agency reported that the plan by the management office of Yuanming Yuan (Garden of Perfect Brightness) Park to rebuild in its entirety one of the palace gates and to complete the project by the end of this year has met with opposition from some conservationists and members of the public. A spokesman for the office provided a guarantee that the reconstruction will be utterly faithful to the original design, but many fear that the project will result in the destruction of genuine original relics. An online poll conducted by sina.com ascertained that 54 percent of the respondents were opposed to the proposal, believing that the site should simply be preserved as it is. Nevertheless, 44 percent believe that 'it is necessary to restore the imperial garden to its former glory'.
